Pop-up Killer
Pop-up ads are small windows that suddenly appear while surfing the Web. Pop-ups were created due to the advertising industry's desire to grab Internet users' attention in a way that traditional banner advertising no longer could. Many Web users find them extremely annoying because you have to close each browser window, and if there are enough of them, they can overload some browsers' capacity. There are 4 main types of pop-up ads:
pop-up
You probably know what a pop-up is. But in case you don't, it's an ad that opens in a new window, usually with JavaScript.
pop-under
A pop-under opens beneath the current web page.
interstitial
Like pop-up ads, these ads appear in their own browser window. When a visitor clicks on a link, the interstitial ad appears before the browser brings up the linking page. Most interstitial ads close automatically, so they are less annoying than pop-up ads, but they briefly fill the user's screen, so they definitely make an impression.
eyeblasters, shoshkeles, and overlays
Overlay type ads are built by various companies, generally using Macromedia Flash, but rather than playing in a specific space, they generally take over the entire page, overwriting the page, replacing the background, or just fluttering around.
The newest, most insidious type of pop-up ad doesn't even require you to click it to take you to another site; simply moving your pointer over the ad in a certain way will send your browser to an advertiser's web page. Advertisers call these "kick-through" ads, a more aggressive spin on the term click-through (defined as when you deliberately click an ad to visit the advertiser's site).
